Post-Operative Instructions
These are generic suggestions. Any specific questions, please call our office for details.
Immediately following oral surgery, change gauze around the site every hour until it is light pink in color (like a pencil eraser). All our oral stiches are dissolvable, and they will disappear on their own.
Ice should be applied to the outside of the face for about 20 minutes, then off for 20 minutes for the first 1-3 days following surgery. Ice and sleeping elevated will alleviate sever swelling. In 2-3 days, pain and swelling will peak. Please switch to warm compressor after 72 hours. Applying warm compressors will help breaking up the swelling.
After the 24-hour period, rinse gently with warm salt. This should be done hourly and especially after meals.
Please avoid smoking, spicy food or carbonated drinks, use of straw, spitting or forceful swishing, chewing or crunching hard foods, nose blowing (applicable to upper teeth) for at least two weeks.
We recommend maintain soft diet (yogurt, ice cream, jello, mashed potatoes, pasta etc) for at least one week.
If you were prescribed antibiotics, start taking them (Amoxicillin, Clindamycin, Cleocin) the day of the extraction immediately. Do not stop even if you are feeling better. It is important to finish the full course.
Pain Medications can be taken every 4-6 hours as needed. If you are prescribed a narcotic, please do not do any activities (work, drive) as it will make you tired. Also you must avoid drinking alcohol. You may experience nausea from taking narcotic. If this is the case, please decrease the frequency or stop taking the medication. Call our office for any assistance.
If you have a follow up appointment scheduled, you MUST show up. Failure to show may increase the chance of worsening of complication if there is any. If you cannot make it to the appointment, please call our office to reschedule at least 48 hours before.
